I loved the part about God having a relationship with animals (all flesh) including your dog Sophie. No, I don’t think you are crazy, or if you are, you have company. I think Christians and theologians have a very long way to go in this area. Even the Catholic Church which usually has a clear cut, detailed explanation for/position on everything is all over the spectrum on the status of animals. I heard one priest on EWTN say that animal suffering doesn’t matter in the slightest but that we should not mistreat animals because that would be degrading to us (I had to turn him off). Another opinion I have heard from Father Benedict Groeshel (also EWTN) and others is that God cares about those animals that people have loved. And I guess doesn’t give a whatever about those animals who met only with human cruelty and neglect. I think that makes for a very strange image of God. C. S. Lewis, one of your favorite authors, and mine too if we stay off the topic of women, has some great stuff here. He found it odd that people have argued that animal suffering and mistreatment of animals does not matter because they don’t have eternal souls. IF so, wouldn’t that be all the more reason that how we treat them in this life matters? Try googling on C. S. and animal theology sometime if you haven’t before. Too bad he did not live longer to think about issues like how animals are treated in factory farming.
